| Can tuberous begonias be planted directly in the ground outdoors? Or must they be started indoors prior to outside planting? If can be directly planted outdoors, when is it safe to do so? (I live in suburban Philadelphia, PA. I believe this is Zone 6/7.) If they can be planted outdoors from the getgo, how long will it take for the tubers to bloom? |
| You can certainly start them in the ground once temperatures are reliably warm at night and the soil has warmed to about 60 degrees (this is optimum for getting them to kick into gear). They should start blooming in July. Surprisingly, starting them indoors in March really only gains about a month in terms of bloom because you have to wait until temperatures are well moderated before you can set out the plantlets in say, mid-May. |
