What is the best type of mulch to place around recently planted Ward yews, Emerald Gaiety Euonymus, and Euonymus alata 'Compacta'? Should I place plastic sheeting under the mulch?

Mulch is great to help retain soil moisture, reduce weeds, and as it breaks down it provides nutrients to the soil. Any organic matter can be used as mulch. Try compost, bark, wood chips, straw, or pine needles. Plastic sheeting under the mulch isn't needed. It interferes with water and nutrient passage, and can promote a moist area just below its surface that encourages roots to stay at the surface. Thanks for writing!
