I recently planted a weeping cherry and a weeping mullberry in my front yard. I want to keep them pruned in order to keep them reasonably small (7 foot tall with a four foot canopy). Is this possible? If so, how often can I prune and how much? |
It might have been better to look for a tree with a smaller mature size than these, but with careful annual pruning you may be able to control their sizes. Over time however it may weaken them and shorten their life spans. Of the two, the pussy willow is probably the more resiliant and can be pruned almost any time during winter, spring or summer. (If you prune during the winter you can force the branches to enjoy them indoors.) The flowering cherry should be pruned in spring after it blooms. You may find the pruning diagrams in this webpage helpful when the time comes: http://www.ces.uga.edu/pubcd/B... Good luck with your project! |
