Celastrus scandens, American Bittersweet is a vigorous, deciduous, twining vine or vine-like shrub with glossy green leaves and yellowish-white 2"-4" long flowering panicles. On the female plant, these will develop into clusters of fruit. Since the flowers contain the reproductive parts, the only other way to tell the difference between male and female is to slice the flowers in half and look at the parts.
