I have noticed some aphids congregating on my peach and apple trees. Among them are also some baby flies. Is that what they are? And why are they with the aphids?

When aphids feed on plant tissues they excrete a sweet substance called 'honeydew'. Ants find this substance to be quite attractive, as do fruit flies. If you get rid of the aphids, the flies will leave, too. Hose the leaves off with a strong stream of water to dislodge the aphids and wash away the honeydew. This should take care of the problem for the time being. When aphids find the leaves again and begin feeding, wash them off with plain water.
