How many days should red onions remain in the ground after the tops have fell, and the watering has stopped?

Once the tops have yellowed, you can dig the onions. Try to dig on a sunny day and lay the onions out to dry in the sun. You can lay the tops of one row over the bulbs of another to help prevent sunscald. When the out skins are thoroughly dry, wipe off any soil and remove the tops (unless you plan to braid them). Store in a cool, dry place. The bulbs will keep from 4-12 months when properly dried and stored.
