My strawberries (year #2 for these plants) are not sweet this year. Is there any trick to making them sweet? Did I fertilize wrong?

In my experience, strawberries turn sour if they do not receive enough water while the berries are forming. Conversely, they are nearly tasteless if they receive too much water. These plants do best with a rich, evenly moist soil that is well drained (meaning not soggy). Regular watering if it does not rain, combined with a mulch to help conserve soil moisture, should help. Also, be sure they are truly ripe -- some varieties look ripe a few days before they actually peak. Sour berries can make fabulous jam, though!
