I guess in a sense this plant is a pest as I cannot get rid of it. Do you have any ideas of how to rid my yard and gardens of Japanese knotweed? |
Like many exotic plants we put in our gardens, Japanese knotweed has a reputation for escaping cultivation. It's such a sturdy, vigorous plant that it can become a pest in no time at all. For absolute eradication you'll need to dig the plants, roots and all. While you're working your way through the garden, be sure to keep the tops of these plants cut down. Keeping them from flowering and going to seed is important to stop their spread. Since the roots need foliage to supply them with food, it you keep the tops cut down, the roots will eventually run out of energy. It won't be easy, but you can eliminate Japanese knotweed if you keep after it! |
