| Currants are self-pollinating and generally produce their first crop within 3 years. Fruit is borne on new wood so if you haven't pruned your bush, you may need to cut back the old canes so new shoots will develop. In the early spring, cut back almost to ground level, leaving 2-3 buds on each stem. This will encourage new fruiting wood. You'll need to prune annually after harvest, cutting some of the old canes down to the ground and pruning 1/3 to 1/2 of the remaining canes to renew the plant and make it as productive as possible. |
