My zucchini is being eaten by something and I would like to know what I can put on the plant that will not harm it or us, but will do away with the insect.

There's no sure-fire way of getting rid of a pest unless you can identify it. If it's the zucchini itself that is being eaten, I'd guess slugs are feeding at night. Try going out after dark with a flashlight to see if you can catch them in the act. If so, skewer them with a sharp stick. Be sure to remove any debris and old plant material around the garden so the slimy creatures won't have any hiding places. You can use crushed eggshells, diatomaceous earth, or copper strips to keep the slugs from invading your garden, or you can set some traps out. Find out first what you're dealing with, though, before you wage an all-out war!
