I have a banana tree that is about 3years old and 3 feet tall. How do I get it to produce fruit? I live in southern Wisconsin, and bring it in for the winter. We heat with wood,a nd it stays warm. In the spring when it gets warm enough I take it out. I give it fertilizer once a month. Can you give me any suggestions?

There are two different plants that are sold as banana trees. One is Musa and the other is Ensete. Ensete will flower when the plant is about 5 years old and then the plant will die. It will not produce fruit. Musa will produce edible fruit, especially if given reflected heat in the summer. The flowers on this plant are yellow with reddish-purple bracts. Continue to keep your plant warm in the winter, feed it monthly, and mist the leaves occasionally to increase humidity while the plant is indoors. You can expect this plant to grow 6'-8' tall with leaves that are about 5' long.
