I have a two year old Butterfly bush which is about 5" tall now. The leaves on the lower portion of the plant have all turned brown but the top of the plant continues to get new growth and flower. What's the problem?

It sounds as though your Buddleia needs some pruning! The normal course of events is to cut back the flowering branches as soon as they've finished flowering. This encourages the plant to produce new stems and branches. Some of the older branches can be cut all the way down to the ground, and the rest of the branches can be cut back by one-third to one-half. By pruning your Buddleia you'll keep it in a constant state of renewal, with new growth in the center and top of the plant.
