I have moved from Michigan to Arkansas and have noticed a lot of 'home' gardeners here plant castor beans around their garden. I would like to know why. Someone said it keeps moles away. Is this true?

It seems a lot of gardeners have faith in the mole repelling qualities of castor bean plants. Ricinus, the Castor bean plant, is valued for its large, deeply lobed, green, bronze, purple, or dark red leaves. The stalks are tipped with clusters of bright red or light green flowers in summer, followed by round, prickly seed pods.
