I have just planted my first "Hollandia Broom". A friend seeing this told me they should be cut back every year. If this is true, When is the best time and how far back do I trim it. Also, as a first timer with this kind of shrub, Is there anything else helpful to know? |
"Hollandia" is a type of Warminster broom (Cytisus x praecox) and should grow about 4 feet tall. It prefers full sun, excellent drainage as would be obtained with a somewhat sandy soil, and blooms profusely in early spring. While many gardeners do cut back other types of broom such as Scotch Broom regularly, it is not critical for this one. If you trim it back for tidiness, do so lightly immediately after flowering. Yo may also trim away any winterkill in early spring. |
