Fall is generally a good time to plant container grown trees and shrubs, but the real key to success is good planning and good soil preparation. You need to analyze your site and test your soil so you know what type of growing conditions you have, then prepare your soil and select your plants to suit the conditions you have to offer. To help you get started, you might wish to look at a basic book or two about gardening and landscaping. One I particularly like is "Gardening for Dummies" by Michael MacCaskey, ISBN 1-56884-644-4. In it you will find a lot of straightforward advice as well as information on soil preparation, selecting plants and how to maintain them. Good luck with your new landscape!
