The hostas I planted last spring have turned brown and the leaves have curled. Could they be getting too much sun or not enough water?

Yes to both possible causes. Hostas don't like being in the Deep South. To make them happy you must give them a bright, shady location (especially not afternoon sun), a soil with lots of organic matter added, and a planting area with excellent drainage. They also want to be kept moist, but should not be kept soggy wet.
