We have a Rose of Sharon bush that is 10 to 12 feet tall. Would it be adviseable to cut it back to about 6 foot and would the side branches eventually fill in the trunk area? |
This shrub (Hibiscus syriacus) can be pruned very hard and will resprout nicely assuming it is healthy to begin with. If you trim it back to about six feet the new growth will probably start from just below your cuts. The most drastic pruning (cutting it off at the ground) will result in multiple stems from the ground up. The best time to do any form of pruning on this shrub is in late winter before there are any signs of growth. |
