I am a 15 year old sophmore and just had my first successful summer garden with tomatoes, cucumbers and squash. I really enjoyed gardening and would like to plant a winter garden but I'm at a loss as to what can be planted. We all like green beans, fava beans, garlic. Please offer some suggestions for a first-timers winter garden.

First of all, congratulations on the success of your first vegetable garden! Winter gardening is not always possible for gardeners in the northern regions of the nation, but you're lucky to live in a relatively mild-winter area, so you should be able to plant and harvest lots of different kinds of vegetables.

Winter gardening has rewards you won't find in the summertime, including fewer insect pests and the need to water less frequently, due to natural rainfall. For best success choose cool-season crops, such as lettuce, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, beans and peas. There's an enormous array of salad greens, usually called Mesclun mixes, with various leaf color, texture and flavors, which can add interest to any fresh salad.

Plant your crops at two-week intervals to extend your harvest as far into the season as possible.
