I'm considering growing orchids as a hobby. Does one need to spray orchids from time to time to have success?

You might. Orchids may become infested with, say, insects or fungus from time to time and one of the options available is to spray. Problems are more apt to happen in a greenhouse where sanitation and growing conditions are less than perfect, but can also be imported with newly introduced plants. Since the greenhouse is a closed environment and plants are grown in close proximity, any problem can spread relatively quickly -- thus the need for vigilance and prompt action. Careful (and clean) orchid growers are often able to keep spraying to a bare minimum.
