|What type of grass seed do I need that will grow under & near "Jack" pine trees? The soil is probably acidy. What can I put on to help reseeded areas near these same pine trees?|
|Unfortunately grass often does poorly under pines because of the acidity and because of the trees' strong competition for water, nutrients and sunlight. You may find that very little will grow beneath your pines and that a simple layer of mulch and pine needles is enough to keep the area free of weeds.
In any case, should you wish to try to grow grass there, you will need to run some basic soil tests and then try to amend your soil based on the results. Your Conty Extension (840-7408) should be able to help you with the tests and also suggest grass varieties best suited to the growing conditions and your local area.
