|I would like to plant a walnut tree and also a hazelnut tree. I have heard that the two of them will pollinate each other but I need to know what variety to plant in middle Georgia.|
|Black walnut (Juglans) is native to the eastern U.S. and English walnut is native to southwest Asia. Both will grow in your area, but the English walnut will perform best. Try 'Carmelo', 'Hartley', or 'Cookes Giant Sweet'. These are self-fruitful and shouldn't require a pollinator. When trees require cross-pollination, it must be from another tree of the same species.
Hazelnut (Corylus species) is unrelated to walnut, but is sometimes called filbert. Cross pollination is required for these trees, so plant two. 'Barcelona' and 'Butler' are good choices. 'Ennis' can be pollinated by 'Butler', as well.
Hope this information helps you choose just the right trees!
