|We recently got some seeds from a Cypress tree and need to know how to plant them, any special requirements, best time to plant, etc.|
|Cypress trees need a period of moist cold treatment prior to planting. Place the seed in a polyethylene bag with 2-3 times their volume of damp (not soggy-wet) peat. Close up the bag and place it in the refrigerator for 3 weeks. Check the seeds from time to time to make sure they are moist. |
After 3 weeks remove the bag and sow the seeds on the surface of a good clean growing mix. Moisten the seeds and mix but don't cover them. They need light to germinate. Place a clear plastic bag or sheet (or pane of glass) over the seed starting container to hold in moisture while allowing light to reach the seeds. Leave this on until the seed has germinated.
Cypress can be irregular in its germination, so you may want to plant seeds in individual pots so some can be uncovered as they start to grow while others remain covered.
You can start this process anytime from now through winter provided you have a bright indoor location to protect the growing seedlings from cold weather until spring.
