There are many kinds of lavender (lavandula), but all require full sunshine and very little water during the growing season. All thrive in loose, well-draining soil and little to no fertilizer. To keep the plants compact and neat, prune immediately after flowering. If frost nips back the stems, prune out the damaged wood in the early spring.
