|The banana tree (Musa) is tropical in nature and the tops can be damaged by freezing weather, but the roots are hardy to about 20F degrees. If you leave your plants outdoors and the tops are killed back by severe winter weather, new tops should sprout from the crown of the plant the following spring. Be sure to mulch the root area to help protect it from very cold weather conditions if you decide to leave your banana trees outdoors in the ground.
