| The best insurance for mums is that they be planted in a well drained location so that the roots will not rot over winter and they should be planted early enough that they have time to become well rooted before the ground freezes. Opinions may vary, but in my experience mums winter better without any mulch over the crowns -- since again the most common danger is rot. A good snow cover makes an admirable insulating layer but if you prefer to mulch, use something very light such as pine boughs. Next spring you should find new shoots emerging around the perimeter of the plant -- although it is also worth keeping in mind that some mum varieties are simply hardier than others. |
