| HELP, I just brought in my New Guinea impatiens for the winter. It is seeming to die on me. The leaves are all drying up and falling off I water it every other day, I have not repotted it yet. Am I watering it too much? How much light do they need. I have it in the warmest room in the house which is never below 73 or so. There is an east window and a south window that lights up this room. I would love to keep it over the winter if at all possible it was a beautiful plant this summer. |
| New Guinea Impatiens is a popular houseplant that will bloom all winter long if its needs are met. I suspect that your plant is reacting to the change in environment, from outdoors to in. The humidity and temperature may be quite different and your plant should have been slowly acclimated to living indoors by bringing it in at night and taking in out during the day, so it would have an opportunity to adjust. You can pinch back the stems and new stems, foliage and flowers will develop. Here are some handy hints for keeping your plant happy while indoors: Provide average household temperatures, minimum of 55F in winter. Give bright light, with a few hours of direct sunlight in the winter to promote flowering. Keep potting soil moist but not soggy wet. Mist leaves if the air is dry, but don't get water on flower petals or they will become spotted. Repot in the spring, using fresh potting soil.
