|We live in the northeast and would like to know when we should prune apple trees? When is the best time to spray them and what would you recomend for spraying them?|
|Apples are generally pruned during the winter or when they are dormant. This way you can easily see the branch structure as you prune.
The spray schedule for apples is locally based and depends on the weather that particular year as well as incidences of pests and diseases in your area plus which varieties you are growing and their susceptibilities/resistances. Your local County Extension (724-9120) should be able to provide you with the suggested spray regime and schedule for your local area.
You are wise to ask now because in some cases spraying begins very early in the season. In the meantime, be sure to pick up and remove any fallen fruit, foliage and prunings to help limit carryover of pests and diseases from one year to the next.
