Any shrub should be spaced so that it has room to grow to its mature size, both height and width. Otherwise, it is stressed since it is competing with others for space, and we end up pruning the plant needlessly. As for depth, again any shrub should be planted at the same depth it is in its original container. There are so many hollies, that when you same "compact hollies," I don't really know which one you are referring to without the Latin name. Most nursery plants will have markers that list a plant's mature size. If not, the nursery should be able to tell you. I hope this info helps!
