If the new little plant has roots of its own it can be planted either in the fall or in the spring. The advantage of fall planting is that natural rains will help keep the roots of the transplant moist. Spring is also a good time because plants naturally want to grow when the weather warms, which includes new roots as well as stems and foliage. Either way, be sure to water your plant once each week in the absence of rainfall to help it become established in its new home.
