Will the annual sunflowers have a permanent place in my garden from reseeding, by just letting the seeds fall where they may, or will the birds and squirrels eat them all or the winter kill off the seeds?

In my garden, the sunflowers do not usually self sow very well. In part this is due to growing hybrid varieties, also in part due to the seeds being eaten, and also I suspect because they may rot during the winter. For these reasons I usually plant new seed outdoors each spring.
