I have a few small potted pansies. Can I plant them now outside, or should I keep them inside and plant them in the Spring? |
Usually pansies are planted in early fall so they can become well established before winter; this way they really take off quickly in the spring as soon as the weather begins to moderate. Rather than try to keep them going indoors where it will be a bit warmer and a bit darker than they really like, I think you would do better to plant them outside now even though it is a bit late. Prepare the soil well and water them in, then mulch them to help reduce the chances of their heaving during the freeze thaw cycles. If they should heave anyway, simply press them back into the soil as best you can. |
