The rule of thumb is there should be about 6 inches to the base of a large bulb, or about twice as deep as their height atop the bulb. In other words, a two inch bulb would be planted with the base six inches down. Make sure to loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole so the roots can penetrate easily.
