Hollies do best with ample sunlight, an evenly moist yet well drained soil and require an acid pH to stay healthy. There are also a few pest and other problems that could make them thin and look poorly. Unfortunately, based on your description it is difficult to make a guess as to why your hollies are not looking good. You might want to take a sample to your County Extension and see if they can make a more specific diagnosis. Their telephone number is 452-1423.
