My Cannas have turned black after the first freeze. Do I need to cut them back or what?

You can leave the tops as a surface mulch and protective covering over the winter if you wish. Remove them in spring about the time the new growth emerges. Or, if you don't like the looks of them, you can remove them now. The area can then be dressed up a bit with some mulch to protect the soil surface and the perennial plants over the winter.
