| Conifers have a basic growth pattern of a central leader and whorls of branches developing at fairly regular intervals along its length. Conifers do not regenerate readily from mature wood because there are few or no dormant buds present in the older woody branches and stems. Therefore, if your plant is mature, it will be difficult to promote bushy growth. If it is still fairly young, you can clip back the ends of the branches and it will fill in nicely. I've seen young cedar trees clipped into hedges and they look quite attractive. It's important to prune or pinch them back annually to keep them producing new leaves and stems. |
