Fall Soil Preparation - Knowledgebase Question

I just put up a fence.next year I would like to plant
in front of it.Should I till the soil this year,or wait until spring?
its getting late in the year,but the ground is not frozen yet.
I have lots of mulched leaves,should I add them to the tilled soil?

It's a great idea to prepare the soil now! That way it will have time to settle and you will be able to work at a more leisurely pace next spring. Shredded leaves are an excellent addition, as is almost any form of organic matter such as compost or aged stable manure and bedding, etc. You might also add a layer of mulch such as shredded bark to help reduce soil erosion over the winter. You should also run some basic soil tests to determine what other amendments (such as lime), if any, you need to add. Your County Extension (461-1000) should be able to help you with the tests and interpreting the results.
