I'm looking for a hazelnut tree suitable for our home in coastal california. The weather is: very foggy most mornings and evenings, sunny during the day. Temps vary between 40-70's with most days around 50-60 year round. The tree would need to be in a continer as we are planning to buy a house in the next two to three years. Thanks for your help.

Probably the best choice for you is Corylus cornuta californica, the Western Hazelnut. It's native to the damp slopes of the northern coast ranges of California. It is more of a shrub than a tree, with open, spreading habit to 12' high. The nuts are small but flavorful.
