|These plants tend to get long and lanky over time, especially if they were chemically treated at the commerical grower's to keep them denser and bushier than normal and the treatment is wearing off. Some gardeners will trim them little by little and selectively remove branches throughout the growing season, and others will trim them back hard in late winter or early spring. If you do it little by little you will always have blooming wood on the plant. If you cut it back hard all at once there will be a recovery period without blooms but in my experience this does keep the plant smaller overall. It is really a matter of personal choice.
