A year ago we purchased a pre-existing home and since have been trying to determine what is going on with our lawn. Again this fall it has turned brown in the front yard but remained green on the sides and back. It has been
fertilized earlier this fall and we have had 2 hard frosts so I am suspecting that maybe a previous owner started plugs of Zoysia and it has slowly taken over the front. It looks terrible because it is brown and doesn't match the grass around the house, so what can we do to stop its growth? reseed? or will we have to rip it up and start over?
I do know it is not the appropriate grass for our area. Thanks for your help!!!

Based on your description it does sound like your front lawn has been planted with a grass such as zoysia. It would need to be eradicated with an herbicide before a new lawn could be either seeded or sodded or it will take over again. You might wish to consult with your local County Extension (970-3000) as to the most appropriate method and timing for killing the zoysia and then on the best way to start a new lawn. They should also be able to suggest the specific grass seed varieties best suited to your local area. You might also consider overseeding it for the winter if ripping it out is overwhelming.
