|Can I start an Asian Pear Tree fron the seed of a pear purchased in our local grocery store?|
|You can plant the seeds and grow a pear tree, but it will likely be of lesser quality and/or less adapted and productive than a selected grafted variety chosen for your area.
A fruit tree grown from seed is a cross between two parent trees. Therefore it will not be identical to the "mother" tree (the fruit you bought from the store), any more that a child is identical to either of its parents. For this reason, virtually all fruit trees sold are specially developed, desirable varieties that have been grafted to a rootstock. Sometimes there are other reasons why a tree grafted to a rootstock is superior to a tree growing on its own roots.
