| I want to know if I planted a Bing cherry last spring will it bear fruit next season and is there any thing I should do for protection from the winter season? |
| Cherry trees are quite winter hardy. You might mulch around the base (but not up against the bark) and place some hardware cloth (wire mesh) around the base of the trunk to protect it from damage by animals such as rabbits. It will only bear fruit if it blooms successfully next spring and there is a pollinator nearby. Bing, Lambert, and Napolean (Royal Ann) cherry trees do not pollinate one another, so you will need a pollinating variety such as Black Tartarian or Republican, Stella, Van, or a sour cherry such as Montmorency. Keep in mind also that fruit trees tend to need a number of years to settle in and mature enough to bear well. They also produce more reliably if kept healthy and this may require a regular spray routine based on the diseases and weather prevalent in your area each year.
