What should be done with the flower of a bromeliad after it has finished blooming and is no lomger attractive?

Go ahead and cut it off near the base of the bloom stalk. After flowering, the plant will produce offshoots from the base, called "pups", and then the "mother plant" will die. In time, the pups will form roots at their base and can then be cut away from the other plants and planted to form more plants.
