I want to plant perennials for my house-bound mom who loves flowers, but am afraid this is too cold a time. She lives in Los Angeles, CA. Can you give me a list of Winter-appropriate perennials I can buy and plant please.

There are only a few perennials that perform during the winter months; pansies and primroses come most readily to mind. Annuals that like cool weather include ornamental kale, snapdragon, chrysanthemum, Clarkia, Dianthus, candytuft, Forget-Me-Not, and Nemesia. Since you're purchasing plants, you may have to settle for what's available in local nurseries. Or, try the garden centers of large chain-stores - they may have just what you're looking for.

Good luck in your search!
