I am aware of some of the vegetables that are labeled "cole crops" but cannot find a definition for the term. What does the term mean and where did it come from? Also, is it limited to vegetables only?

Cole crops are vegetables in the cabbage family (also known as Brassica) such as broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, kale and so on. I believe the word cole is an Anglicized version of the German word for cabbage (kohlkopf) but perhaps there is more to it than that.
