We attempted, several times, to starte Aubrieta Gems from seed with essentailly no success. Covered seed starting trays, uncovered trays, mixed with soil and planted outdoors, etc..... We do not have such problems with any other seeds that we plant, yet this particular variety is essentially impossible. Only 5 plants survived out of 10 packages that we plnated by a variety of means. Can you offer specific procedures for starting Aubrietta Gems?

According to the now out of print Thompson and Morgan instructions, aubrieta seeds should be planted on the soil surface (not covered) or else pregerminated on a moist paper towel. In both cases the seeds should be covered with plastic wrap to maintain soil moisture and humidity levels and placed in bright diffuse light away from direct sun. Soil temperature should be between 65 and 75 degrees and the seeds should take between two and three weeks to germinate. Once they germinate, treat as ordinary seedlings but be sure to use a moist yet free draining soil mix. I hope this helps!
