I am planning on planting azaleas on the north side of my house in the spring and would like to know of a tall tree-like shrub that could be planted with them to add height. The area gets some late afternoon sun but not much. I would prefer something that blooms.

My first choice would be camellia. It likes the same soil pH (slightly acidic) as azalea, will remain green all year, and has the added bonus of blossoms. Camellias can become quite stately with age and can be allowed to remain shrubby, or the lower branches can be trimmed to make the plant resemble a tree.

There are so many cultivars available, your next decision will be what color!
