What is the correct method for pruning daisies and mums to prepare for the winter season?

Most gardeners will deadhead the daisies routinely while in bloom and then trim back the stems to about four inches from the ground in late fall once the cold has done its work. Mums can be left as is for the winter and trimmed back in the spring or can be trimmed back to the basal foliage in late fall once the blooms are spent. In spring clear away any winter damaged stems and foliage on both, being careful not to damage newly emerging growth.
