There is not a Japanese magnolia, but there's a Star Magnolia (Magnolia stellata) that's native to Japan. Perhaps this is the plant you're looking for. Magnolia stellata is a slow growing shrubby plant to about 10' tall, evergreen except in the coldest regions, providing a very early display of star-shaped blooms with very narrow petals.
