Our daughter is planning a late August wedding. She would like the reception on our farm. What kind of flowers can I grow next spring that will bloom late summer to be used for table decorations?

So many factors can affect bloom time, including weather, soil conditions, sun exposure, and so on. I suggest you plant a variety of flowers that will mature over a period of several weeks in either direction of the wedding date, so if there is a problem with one type, you won't be without blossoms.

First, determine the date of the wedding. Next, determine how many days from planting seeds to maturity each flower averages. Then simply count back from the wedding date to determine the approximate planting date. Johnny's Selected Seeds has an excellent catalog with a wide variety of annual flowers, which contains the days to maturity in each description. Since I don't know what color or types of flowers you and your daugher prefer, I suggest you look through that catalog. You can order it online at If you have specific questions about any of the flowers, please send another email to the Q&A site. Good luck!
