Oranges have a specific heat requirement in order to ripen fruit, and Valencia oranges do best in your area. As with all citrus, plant in a sunny location, in rich, moist, well-draining soil. Prepare the planting hole before unpotting the new tree, place a small mound of soil in the bottom of the hole, then spread the roots out so they fall naturally. Fill in around the roots, gently tamp the earth down, then form a basin over the root area to hold water. Water well to help settle the soil. Provide water once each week to help your new tree become firmly established in its new home.
